в отличие от распространённых на сегодня скалярных вычислительных систем, векторными называют компьютеры с высокоскоростными векторными процессорами (vector processor), которые особенно эффективны для работы с изображениями и массивами данных, поэтому применяются для анализа климатических изменений, космических данных, а также для моделирования в сфере нанотехнологий и т. д. Производительность самых мощных суперкомпьютеров сейчас составляет сотни и тысячи терафлопс (TFLOPS)
